Mary Carpenter Dunlavy 1765-1828. Born on the ocean voyage to America; Mary was independent from the start.  She left her Loyalist family as a young teenager to move to New Jersey to live with a Patriot doctor and his family.  She then became a Revolutionary War nurse and married a Revolutionary War veteran named James Carpenter after the war.  Together they became some of first pioneers to come with the John Cleves Symmes group to the Columbia settlement of the Ohio valley.  Widowed with two small daughters, she remarried and moved north to Lebanon Ohio with her second husband Francis Dunlavy.  He was a teacher and considered the first teacher to open a school in Ohio.  Both are recognized for their Revolutionary War contributions.
