Coming from Chilo toward New Richmond on Rt. 52, about 2 miles west of Chilo, - it is on the right. There is a pull off along the road. Easy access and well maintained.
In Memory of Diana – daughter of Lemmel & Sarah Whitney
Who died July 23rd 1823 , age 16 years.”
In front of the grave, between the marker and the highway, is a concrete post, which has affixed to the top of it, a copper plaque, which reads as follows:
“There rests here in the quiet beauty of the valley of the Ohio, the dust of a young girl. On July 23, 1823 a wagon train creaking toward the west, came to a halt close by. When the train moved forward, one of its party had been left along the trail, a hostage against time. Diana Whitney, sleeping where the morning sun painted with strange scarlet and major gold the surface of the river, was sixteen on that summer’s day long ago.”
